Buying A Car

Ever since I've decided to get a car, in preparation for year 2009, I've been paying more attention on the cars on the roads. Prior to that, unlike most guys, I don't know much about cars. Of course, I know the brands like Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Subaru, Mercedes , BMW and the dream cars Ferrari or Lamborghini. But I don't know the different models within the brands and I don't know the terms like hatchback, coupe, 4-wheel drives, front-wheel drives, rear-wheel drives etc.

Anyway, I started paying attention to cars whenever I take cabs and try to make a mental note of the model and make of the cars that I like. Then when I have internet access, I'll google for the price.

Once, while on a cab, I can hear the sound of the car engine roaring by. It was a black, shiny car with sleek curves. It zoomed past so fast like it was a sprinting black panther. I only managed to catch partial brand of the car and barely remembered that the logo look like Poseidon's spear. I had to rely on multiple google search terms before I found it!

It was the Maserati GranTurismo! Isn't it sweet? It has the curves that would make men weak at their knees. It was the car that I wanted to get until I found out the price from sgcarmart.com. It was $428k! If I was driving it on the road, it would be akin to driving my HDB unit on the road!

Dejected, I turned my attention to other cars on the road and after making a mental note to forget about any models from Maserati.

Another time, again a black car just zoomed in front of the cab that I was in. Since this time, the black car had to stop for the red light. I had the time to study the car, brand and model name. This is another sleek black car with curvaceous lines. The logo was a pair of wings like those you would see on the uniform of a fight jet pilot. It was an Aston Martin DB9.

From sgcarmart, it costs a freaking $706k! That would almost be me driving 2 of my HDB units on the road! If I can afford it, that is! I should have realised any car driven by James Bond would not be cheap.

I decided to give up looking at the cars on the road and just go for the Japanese brands I know. I finally realised that if it was a brand or model I don't recognise, it probably is because it was expensive and thus I rarely get to see it on the roads.

In the end, I bought a second-hand Toyota. Heh!

P.S. I went through an 8 hours intensive refresher course before I collected my car. It was a really long while since I got my license. :p

Toyota is a good choice. Common car. Cheap to fix and low insurance premiums. Does the job. Relatively fuel efficient also. :-P
