Square Room
When Today announced the formation of Association of Bloggers (Singapore) aka ABS, it was really the first time I heard of its official status. Prior to that, even though there are many members in the Protem committee whom I view as friends, I don't have any inkling of its official status or even the committee members. Honestly, I was surprised by its veil of secrecy that shrouded its formation. If it is a company launching a product for profit, I can understand the requirement of secrecy but ABS is a non-profit organisation formed to unite local bloggers. Then what's up with all the hush-hush? Wouldn't it have been better to have been more open and upfront regarding its formation which may foster more discussion among the bloggers and make everyone has a better understanding in its formation and purpose? Isn't social media about conversations? This is afterall a public and registered association. It is not suppose to be a secret society.
From the recent chatter in plurk, apparently there was a gag order disallowing its committee members to disclose any information to anyone - not friends, not family members, not boyfriends, not girlfriends. Again, why the gag order? Why the secrecy? If this is a non-profit association setup by bloggers for bloggers, then why is it behaving like gahmen-linked establishments with its non-transparency? But the irony is, the gag order seems to have been restricted to the blogosphere because according to the Today report, even before its formal launch, the association has received emailed media invites to cover events. Apparently, some are more equal than others.
In all honesty, I was pretty neutral when I learnt of its official formation. I was neither for nor against them. I would be in the area where some would call it grey. I've always believed the virtual world is really big enough for groups with diverse interests to co-exist. If a group of bloggers have a sense of duty and calling to unite the bloggers and wanting to form an official registered association, it is their perogative. It is a noble goal to unite fellow bloggers and to promote professionalism among the association's members. Until I read the entry by the association's president:
Singaporean bloggers were like loose sand, they were not united. They were easily manipulated and even banned for standing up against the foreign tyrant from self-proclaimed 'community meta weblog for Singapore bloggers'. Small bloggers are just too isolated to be able to fight for their rights.
I was surprised of the mentioned of an incident that happened almost 18 months ago and calling the owner of the meta blog a 'tyrant'? In my personal opinion, I thought this was ironical that it came from the president of an association supposedly created to 'promote professionalism among the association 's members'. How is this professional blogging? Why take potshots at an incident that happened so long ago and distract the blogosphere from the official news of its formation? With this, the leader has single-handedly cast suspicion on the purpose behind the forming of the association.
When Lucian of tribolum.com expressed his view on this in his personal capacity, the president's response is to write an entry in a blog titled "To PM Lee Hsien Loong" attacking Lucian on his job and capacity as a civil servant. This is almost akin to the scenario whereby 2 kids involving in a brawl, afterwhich, one of the kid resort to reporting the fight to the authority unit, "Teacher, he bully me!"
Sorry, how is this professional blogging again?
In a short 3 days, instead of uniting the local bloggers, I observed more strife. The association has instead brought out unsightly behaviours. There seems to me also an uneasy feeling, even among friends, if you are not with them, you are against them.
I feel like I'm now standing in a square room, seeing different groups of people occupying different corners of the room. Some at extreme opposite corners; some bigger group and more boisterous than others. Ironically, this is remeniscient of the "in", "out" debacle.
Me? I find myself ostracized and not belonging to any corner.
The room has just gotten colder.

This is one of the best articles I have read from you of late. I think the more controversial and heart-stringing the incident, the better you express yourself. LOL. Nice write.
i have doubts that they are really so called non-profit organization. While the association may not be making money out of it, there will many parties that may benefit from it. An "official" representation for bloggers can be an interesting value proposition for companies and advertisers.
In my personal opinion, what has transpired of ecl's lettertopm blog is the equivalent of the "cantona'ing" of spectators... Yes, I agree those people have an agenda as much as the fan who insulted Cantona's mother, but there is no excuse for the flying kick either.
disclaimer: commenting in a personal capacity as your online friend :)
As usual, logical and insightful writing from you. All I can say in my personal capacity is, some things are not within control.
'if you are not with them, you are against them'
Actually, if you had read my post http://www.xtralicious.com/2009/01/21/noise-it-is-good/, I am adverse to such thinking. In fact, I find it quite juvenile. But that's just me.
I have friends who prefer to be lone rangers. I respect their wishes.
To me, that's friendship means.
Hi Paddy,
Great post -) I can't help but hope to encourage you that there are many people who aren't in the four corners, but are really mingling in the centre of the room and celebrating what's different.
i don't think the majority want to be herded into exclusive corners, but celebrating being ourselves, being different, and yet being part of something bigger, some say singapore, some say the world.
blogging should have the capacity to bring people together, not tear them apart -)
i refer Derrick Kwa's post where he nails it: "What we need is to build the community. Not establish an association."

Paddy? Different people lor. :)
I guess why people are upset is because the people in the AB(S) waltzed in, "da yao da pai" and then assumed position. As opposed to doing real groundwork then deciding to legalise the group. As such, they acted like Moses; no proof of direction, no previous experience but we have to believe that they will take us out of the desert into to the promised land.
Gosh! This is plurkable stuff! Damn I'm good... By the way, Moses never made it out of the desert, and he stayed there for 40 years.
Hi Dhope,
Like that I 'cham' lah... only kena heart-wrenching issue then I can write well?
So in order to constantly write well, I need to lead a live of pain?
Don't want! :p
Hi Weekee,
We'll just have to wait and see...
Hi Xizor,
Agree!
Hi Rachel,
I had already read your entry when you published it. I subscribe to you feed. :)
It was unfortunate that one person's doing overturned and undermined the effort of the rest of the team members and brought out a lot of nasty things.
I do hope that you guys would be ok and not get too much flak for something you didn't do.
Hi Brian,
Thanks for dropping by. Yes, you are right. Derrick Kwa has surmised it succintly. :)
Hi Paddy,
Orh...
Hi Dhope again, :p
I can't help but feel your last sentence has an ominous ring to it. :p
Join MY blogger association on Facebook! No fees, no approval necessary! http://tinyurl.com/fatas
i will join if they pay me 50 bucks for the first yr, and 60 in the subsequent yrs. cheers!
I actually think there is a potential for such an association to exist. But however I stood by the fact that ECL is not the right person to lead it.
ECL is one lady who exist behind the screen, who is not like Paddy or others who are involved have corporation experience and the know how to deal with people in situations. ECL just know how to shoot people whenever she disagrees. That works only if she forever continue to exist behind a screen. But in the real world, it takes a lot of tact and humility to face people, dissolve issues and situations. You need to have a big heart in order to overlook those small small matters and focus on the big picture. ECL DO NOT POSSESS THAT QUALITY.
Anybody in the local blogosphere except her. Honestly. You can even put DK in, i'm sure he'll do a better job.
Judging from comments so far, I can see even before they jump into the war of power struggle, they've facing public scrutiny. So far from their reply, I can see they don't even have answers to many questions that were raised. That speaks very much of what they were made of in the first place.
The genesis of this organisation is wrong. This creation is motivated by the wrong factors and reasons.
If these people are serious, they need to forget about the past first. GENUINELY offer something for bloggers. Value for money is what we bloggers want for see. You want to use us to support you to fight your agenda. Can. But what is the reason I join you and help you in that process?
You guys haven't an iota of business acumen. The way I see it, you have a lot more work to get it going. I venture to say you only had done 1%. 99% is waiting to be done. Heck, you haven't even have a proper website.
For many, this already seems a wolf in sheep skin. Trying to form a vehicle for your whatever agenda. Well, think how to provide value for money first. Like China in the modern world, get there first. It may take 50 years but only a peaceful rise will ensure you rise.
One personal advice for you guys, forget about the past. As long you can't forget, the potential of it won't be realised.
